WORKING TITLE: A Wake - A woke mob

A Wake – A Woke Mob is a dark comedy set in a small rural country town. The patriarch of the family has passed away, the family butt heads, give thanks and heal old wounds in this witty comedy of eras. In A Wake A Woke Mob audiences are asked to strip away the facade, to let down their walls, to share in the fun, and the heartache to help lighten the load of grief. It takes a village to raise a family and it takes a family, community to heal and rebuild after the dust settles. This is the first chapter of a three - part series of plays.


Maurial’s Story

Maurial Spearim is a Gamilaraay, Muruwari woman who draws strength from her connection to Country and People. A writer, actor and singer interested in creating work that brings First Nations voices and stories front and center that can be embraced and celebrated on main stages,in film & television and music arenas. Her work is bold, thought- provoking and unapologetic. Maurial continues to collaborate with a wide range of artists who, much like herself, have a passion to develop,perform and create change. Her first play Blaqq Catt was performed atNext Wave Festival and Melbourne Fringe festival 2016. Maurial has gone on to write poetry for Melbourne Writers festival, Blak & Bright festival, Yirramboi festival. Maurial started writing her second play at Writers program Malthouse Theatre Company 2017. A writer for Cybec Electrics Melbourne Theatre Company with her third play ‘Inside Out’ 2021 and a writer for Illbijerri Theatre Company, 10in10 where Maurial wrote her fourth play ‘Totality 2021.Maurial play ‘Inside Out’ commissioned by and premiered at Yirramboi Festival 2023 and was presented at Malthouse Theatre. Currently Maurial is co-writing for Australian TV series and working on her first children’s book series.
